100 things: 100 photos - photo 15

I have told you many times how obsessed I am with reflections and taking my self-portrait every time I see myself reflected in anything vaguely shiny and I have a camera on me.

So yeah, I love reflections. Blame it on university. We had various art courses where the professors, being a real artists, invariably couldn't be bothered with us simple architecture students, so gave us various arty tasks to do to get us out his hair. One was to choose a theme and take a series of photos to illustrate that theme. My group chose reflections. And since then I have never stopped.

I just like the way the world is distorted and changed into something else, but also how you can see the real and not-real at the same time, what is in front of you and what should be behind you. It mixes up the planes and creates a new more complex reality.

If I remember correctly, this photo was taken in Paris in the summer of 2004 at the top of rue St Denis, as it hits up boulevard St Denis. I was house-hunting, as I was that whole summer and a large part of the autumn too. Finding a flat in Paris is hard. I had just seen a most depressing hole of a place lower down in rue St Denis and then walked up the street.

I remember seeing all these tarted up older ladies standing around and thinking it very odd. I think I passed about five of them before it dawned on me that they must be prostitutes and this must be a red light district. It's all so matter of fact in Paris, you really don't notice things like this at first.

Then I reached the top and came across this most absurdly kitch shop window with all sorts of mirrors and random stuff. As a bonus I'll also show you the photo of the whole glory of the shop window I took before I zoomed in and positioned myself better for the self-portrait.

Some times shop windows and the crazy games of reflections you can get in them can be awfully cool.
